2009 MX-5: affordable, fun-to-drive roadster redefined

For 2009, the third generation MX-5 retains the fun-to-drive qualities of the original and receives updated styling in addition to engineering and equipment upgrades. Mazda Canada will continue to offer the MX-5 in three versions: GX, GS and GT. For those that prefer the benefit of a closed coupe when the roof is up, the Power Retractable Hard Top is offered as an option on the GS or standard equipment on the GT.

The 2009 MX-5 GX is ideal for driving enthusiasts looking for an affordable roadster. Standard equipment includes an all-aluminum, DOHC, 167-horsepower, 2.0-litre, four-cylinder engine with variable valve timing; 5-speed manual transmission; 16-inch alloy wheels with 205/50R16 tires; four-wheel disc brakes; anti-lock brakes (ABS) with electronic brake force distribution (EBFD); front and rear stabilizer bars; power windows and door locks; AM/FM/CD with 6-speakers and steering wheel-mounted audio controls; tilt steering; cruise control; keyless entry; and fog lamps.

A few new standard features find their way onto the GX trim level including side impact airbags, MP3 and WMA functionality on the CD player with an auxiliary audio input, a door pocket insert, and soft feel centre arm rest. A 6-speed sport-shift automatic transmission and air conditioning are available options.

For serious sports car lovers who are especially looking for an exhilarating driving experience combined with maximum handling capabilities, Mazda Canada offers the 2009 MX-5 GS. Upgrades from the GX model include a 6-speed manual transmission, 17-inch alloy wheels with 205/45R17 tires, limited slip differential (LSD), dynamic stability control (DSC), strut tower bar, and sport-tuned suspension with Bilstein® shock absorbers. In addition to the new upgrades to the GX model the GS adds standard air conditioning with climate control, trip computer, premium decorative dash trim, and a mesh type front grille with chrome trim. A 6-speed Sport-shift automatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters becomes an option for the first time on the GS trim, and the Power Retractable Hard Top is also an available option.

For those that prefer an MX-5 with an equal dash sport and luxury then the 2009 MX-5 GT should fit the bill. The GT model comes equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission, 17-inch alloy wheels with 205/45R 17 tires, ABS with EBFD, strut tower bar, Xenon (HID) headlights, Bose® audio system with 7-speakers and 6 disc in-dash CD player, SIRIUS satellite radio, Bluetooth® with Audio Profile, auto-dimming rear-view mirror with HomeLink®, leather seats with adjustable heating, and smart keyless entry system.

2008’s Performance Package option, consisting of a limited slip differential, Dynamic Stability Control, and sport suspension with Bilstein® shock absorbers, becomes standard equipment on 6-speed manual models. The only GT option is a 6-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifter as the Power Retractable Hard Top becomes standard equipment for 2009. For 2009, the automatic transmission option will retain the MX-5 GS and GT’s standard Dynamic Stability Control.

In developing the Power Retractable Hard Top, Mazda engineers paid close attention to the inevitable gain in vehicle weight, as this often negatively impacts driving performance. As a result of careful design and selection of materials the Power Retractable Hard Top option adds only 37kg to the curb weight of the soft-top model.

To accommodate the 3-piece retractable hard top behind the seats and incorporate a hard tonneau cover, Mazda redesigned the rear quarter panels and trunk lid of the soft top model giving the Power Retractable Hard Top equipped models a distinctive rear end. As well, to set this option apart from the standard models, chrome garnishes have been added to the headlamp bezel, front grille surround, and outer door handles. Among the many standard features on the 2009 MX-5 is a 3-year roadside assistance program.

Customers can feel secure knowing that wherever they travel throughout North America should the need arise they can obtain towing, winching, battery boosting, emergency fuel delivery, and tire changing services. They will even get help if locked out of the vehicle. Travel planning services and emergency travel expense reimbursement are included in the roadside assistance program.

The 2009 Mazda MX-5 is covered by a 3-year or 80,000 km vehicle warranty that covers every part of the vehicle except those subject to normal wear. Additional warranties cover powertrain and safety restraint components for a period of 5 years or 100,000 km, body sheet metal perforation for 5 years unlimited kilometres and selected emission control components for 8 years or 128,000 km.
