2014 Acura MDX - The Third Generation

Showcased a few weeks ago at the Edmonton Motorshow in April, the third generation Acura MDX goes on sale this summer at all of the brand's Canadian dealerships.

Acura's engineers chose an all-new platform, but the 2014 MDX still offers room for seven passengers in it's comfortable, versatile and luxurious interior. Apart from some technical aspects, this vintage should provide an enhanced dynamic performance as well as reduced fuel consumption, despite a still powerful engine. Also not that the 2014 Acure MDX comes with some new and original features exclusive to the Canadian market.

Despite it's generous dimensions, the new MDX saw it's total weight reduced by about 125 kg, compared to the previous generation. To get there, Acura has developed a body, 55 percent of which consists of light materials such as high strength steel, aluminum and magnesium. The SUV is stiffer and lighter overall. The new body's aerodynamic design offers a 17 percent improvement in aerodynamic efficiency.

The interior of the 2014 MDX was not overlooked, the effort and improvements made by Acura can clearly be seen in the cockpit. Access to the third row of seating has been facilitated by modifying the door, lowering it by at least 50mm and increasing the entrance space by at least 75mm compared to the previous model. The overall level of passenger comfort has increased, as has that of the driver. The driver's seat is heated and is adjustable in 10 different ways, while the passenger's which is also heated offers 8 different positions. The new centre console has been designed to increase the amount of available front storage space. This will easily accommodate a purse or a laptop bag.

As for the 2014 MDX's powertrain, there is a new V6 i-VTEC 3.5 litre 24 valve direct injection engine. It produces 290 horses and 267 pounds of torque. In terms of transmission, Acura has opted for a new six speed automatic with sport mode, and SportShift sequential shift selectors. The latter will be offered exclusively with the all wheel drive SH-AWD that incorporates new technology to support the Acura's agile handling. This combination allows the 2014 MDX to obtain a Transport Canada fuel consumption rating of 11.2 litres per 100 km in the city and a mere 7.7 litres per 100 km on the highway.

Note that this new edition offers an integrated dynamic three mode ride system. Drivers can choose between Sport, Normal and Comfort modes. This intelligent technology allows real time management of various parameters such as steering effort, acceleration reaction time, the SH-AWD, and dynamic sound control according to each mode's preferences.

Acura has worked hard to improve the 2014 MDX's handling. All of these changes are felt during the driving experience are a quantum leap forward. To achieve optimum results, Acura's engineers have opted for a MacPherson strut front suspension and multi link rear suspension.
