2014 BMW X5

When it comes to the X5, BMW has always been innovative. Remember, BMW created the SAV segment back in 1999. Improving it's athleticism in 2007, the company even went so far as to launch an M version with three powerful engine choices. 1.3 million units later, the BMW X5 will once again set the standard for driving dynamics, luxury and versatility. Unveiled at the end of May, the third generation of the X5 Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) is expected to hit dealerships in November of this year.

Refining things, the 2014 X5 has lost weight. Losing 200 pounds, it's more aerodynamic. Under the hood, three engine options are available- a six cylinder 3.0 litre single turbo with 300 horses and 300 pounds of torque, and a 4.4 litre twin turbo V8 that gets 455 horsepower and 480 pounds of torque. According to BMW, the V6 can go from 0 to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds, and only 4.9 in the V8, making more than a few sports cars look bad. A six cylinder 3.0 litre diesel returns, named the xDrive 35d, offering 255 hp and 413 lbs of torque. More engine options will be made available in December.

For the first time in the X5's history, a rear wheel drive model will be made available. BMW has probably figured out that owners are little more than weekend warriors, keeping to highways or small gravel roads. Off road trips in this vehicle are uncommon.

All available engines are paired to an eight speed automatic transmission. Operating mode can be selected from a choice of four options. The Eco Pro mode is the key to everything in terms of reducing fuel consumption, from the ventilation control to the heated seats. Sport+ mode is more aggressive with a sharper shift and throttle response and the suspension and steering are adapted to suit a sportier driving style. Lodged midway between these two extremes are Comfort and Sport modes.

Inside, you can expect full BMW quality. The X5's interior has been completely redesigned, with several design packages available.

Audiowise, BMW offers three systems: basic, a mid-grade Harman / Kardon system and on the high end, a 1200 watt Bang & Olufson unit featuring 16 speakers, all controlled through BMW's freestanding 10.2 inch Control Display Monitor.
