2015 SUVs With 5-Star Crash Test Ratings

It seems that everyone has an SUV these days, They're sporty, handy and reasonably priced. You can get them in midsize, oversize or small versions, stripped to the studs or super luxurious. Some have great amounts of horsepower, and some are all about fuel efficiency. Here are a few 2015 models that have been voted the safest, delivering better than average standard and optional safety features and receiving the highly coveted 5-stars on the NHTSA's frontal crash, side crash and rollover crash tests.

The 2015 Mazda CX-5 in both FWD and AWD versions was named a 2014 Top Safety Pick Plus by the Insurance Institute For Highway Safety (IIHS) when it comes equipped with Mazda's Smart City Brake Support. This was awarded in addition to the 5-star rating from the NHTSA. It racked up perfect scores in the frontal and side crash tests and four out of five in the rollover test. It's inexpensive too, starting at $21,545 in the U.S as well as exceptionally fuel efficient thanks to Mazda's Skyactiv-G engine.

The 2015 Kia Sorento in both of it's FWD and AWD editions earned five stars from the NHTSA. Just like the CX-5, it scored five out of five on the frontal crash and side crash tests and four on the rollover crash test. It can't even come close to the CX-5 in terms of fuel economy, but it makes up for that in horsepower- the Sorento with the LX trim package offers a whopping 290 hp.

When we think of Volvo, safety immediately comes to mind. The 2015 Volvo XC60 wagon, in both AWD and FWD versions has definitely earned that association. It has won the five-star crash test rating and the Top Safety Pick Plus designation, matching the scores of the CX-5 and the Sorento. Bonus safety equipment includes collision warning and lane departure warning sensors. The XC60 also offers great fuel economy, while delivering generous horsepower at the same time.

The 2015 Subaru Forester AWD not only won the Top Safety Pick Plus (when equipped with Subaru EyeSight) and a five star safety rating, it was also awarded Motor Trend's SUV of the Year award for 2014. The EyeSight feature monitors traffic movements through the use of two cameras, and will warn the driver, even hitting the brakes if the driver does not respond when it senses danger ahead. It earned four out of five on the frontal crash and rollover crash tests, and a perfect five on the side crash test.

For those with deeper pockets, the 2015 Acura RDX- both AWD and FWD models adds a little luxury to the equation. It was voted to have one of the ten best interiors by WardAuto, and matches the others with it's five-star crash rating from the NHTSA, earning perfect scores on frontal crash and side crash tests and four on the rollover test.

It should be noted that no 2015 SUV has earned 5 stars as of yet on the rollover crash test.
