BMW X5 Security Plus Concept

Concepts, sometimes the most fun part of auto shows, aren't always about new vehicles. Sometimes they're just a play on an existing model. At this year's Frankfurt Motor Show, #BMW offered up an interesting variant on it's X5 SUV, the #X5 Security Plus Concept.

Based on the new generation of the X5, the Security Plus Concept will definitely be making it's way to the production line, though in a very limited way. It's not your normal production vehicle, this variant is aimed at a particular group of customers. Standard safety gizmos like airbags and seatbelts just aren't enough for these safety and security conscious consumers. Some of these potential buyers may be prominent public figures, and risk-exposed private individuals with enhanced security needs, particularly in volatile areas such as Russia, South America or Africa. The new BMW X5 Security Plus takes safety and security up several notches. It can even protect it's occupants from an AK-47 attack.

In certain parts of the world, armoured vehicles may be necessary to prevent kidnapping, violent assault and organized crime; and BMW offers a vehicle that can increase the comfort of it's occupants in such situations. Constructed of high strength steel, BMW's new armoured SUV uses more than it's famous performance to get it's driver and passengers out of harms way. The body is built around an armoured passenger cell made of high performance steel mouldings and panels. Windows are made out of polycarbonite material, which will not shatter into the cabin when suffering attacks from blunt weapons. Seams are reinforced with sealed joints, keeping bullet fragments from getting through areas around doors or where the vehicle's panels meet the body pillars.

That extra armour is heavy, so the chassis, electronic management systems, braking and engine have been optimally refined to handle the extra weight. A V8 twin turbo engine, delivering 450 horses under the hood and the intelligent BMW xDrive AWD system allow the X5 Security Plus to handle just as well as a standard X5 whether on road or off, to help the driver escape from unpleasant situations. It also looks just like the non-armoured version from the outside, offering a level of anonymity as an additional security feature.

Additional customizable options available include radiator grill based LED strobe lights, auxiliary battery and even roof mounted beacons with siren system.

The #BMW X5 Security Plus is the only vehicle in it's class that meets the requirements of protection level VR6 (Vehicle Resistance level 6). They also offer a version rated at VR4 to offer reliable protection against street level crime. Vehicles conforming to the VR4 standard are able to resist large-calibre handgun fire, while those offering a VR6 level of protection can withstand terrorist attacks, including projectiles from military-grade weapons that travel at twice the speed of handguns, as well as a defence against shrapnel from hand grenades or other explosives.

BMW offers training programs to instruct X5 Security Plus drivers in the correct operation and handling of it's high security vehicles, as well as discrete and confidential advice form a team of highly competent security experts. BMW has been developing security models for more than 30 years, making them a leader in their field with decades of experience to offer the highest level of protection to it's security minded customers.
