115,285 readers of the German automotive magazine Motor & Sport participated in a survey to determine the best vehicles of 2014. 384 models from 36 manufacturers in ten categories had the chance to be chosen by readers. This is the 38th time that the popular magazine has conducted the poll.
Two Mercedes-Benz luxury vehicles distinguished themselves in this survey. The large Mercedes-Benz S-Class won the award in the luxury car category with nearly 25 percent of the vote. It beat out the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe in second place. Audi's A8 and the Porsche Panamera tied for third place on the podium.
The Mercedes-Benz S-Class has long been one of the most technologically advanced cars on the road. The current generation features a partial autonomous driving system which allows it to easily follow the flow of traffic on a congested highway. It is also equipped with the Magic Body Control system, making the S-Class the first car in the world that can detect the undulations of the road ahead and adjust the car's suspension to those conditions. Comfort is thus pushed to a whole new level.
As for the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, it's origins which date back to 1979 did not hurt it, in fact, on the contrary. Since it's inception, the G-Class has been updated frequently. This classic SUV is now an icon among truly off-road vehicles. It continues to delight "rich" fans who want to drive off the beaten trail with it's advanced technologies and high-end equipment.
Unlike those in the luxury car classification, the race that the G-Class found itself in was much tighter, with it capturing 13.8 percent of the votes. In second place, the BMW X5 earned 12.3 percent of the votes, while the Porsche Cayenne only managed to interest 8.9 percent of readers who participated in the survey. If you find these vehicles too expensive for your budget, further down in the rankings you can find the Lada Niva and the Suzuki Jimny.
