In Geneva on Wednesday, Subaru unveiled it's newest concept, the Viziv; a next generation crossover that's indicative of a new direction for Subaru.
Featuring a sleekly designed silhouette, the large, hexagonal grille mixes well with hook shaped head and running lights and the powerful looking hood. The car's broad wings and simple side panels contribute, giving it a rugged and dynamic look. In the rear, we find similar patterns as those found on the front. The Mistral Silver Metallic paint job emphasizes the dynamism and elegance of the overall design.
Just like the exterior, the Viziv's interior evokes the promise of a dynamic driving performance. The cabin feels highly refined, and functionality is front and centre, the dash panel arranged the driver's ease of use. Subaru's Eye Sight safety system is obviously integrated. Front and centre is a wide display screen that spans the entire width of the dash. Information is displayed in front of both front and rear seated passengers, allowing them to share the driver's excitement.
Under the hood is Subaru's Boxer Diesel Hybrid grouping. It's a plug in hybrid, combining a diesel 2.0-litre boxer four cylinder, a continuously variable transmission and three electric motors. One is dedicated to recharging the batteries by capturing brake energy, while the other two power the rear wheels. By locating the batteries under the hood and beside each rear wheel rather than under the floor, the Viziv can feature a lower, perfectly flat floor as well as full time all wheel drive without requiring a drive shaft. In the city, the car is capable of running exclusively on battery power, while the diesel engine joins in to power the electric motors during longer trips.
Full time all wheel drive meshed with independently motorized rear wheels opens the door to a whole new type of AWD system. This Subaru can control each wheel independently of each other, improving sharp turn capability. With multiple electric motors to power the car, initial acceleration is improved too.
