The 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 at Nurburgring

Last week Chevrolet showed off the new #2014 Camaro Z28. Once very popular, this version was absent from the return of the famous American muscle car. For it's return, the Z28 went to Germany to demonstrate it's prowess on the demanding Nürburgring. It definitely impressed, getting around the circuit in 7 minutes and 37.4 seconds, a time comparable to that of several exotic sports cars.

To compare, the #Z28 even beat the ZL1 by four seconds, and also posted faster times than the published times set by the Porsche Carrera S, Lexus LFA, Ferrari 430 Scuderia, Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren and SLS AMG and the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640. It's also the fastest North American car on that twisting and turning course outside of the Viper or Corvette.

In addition, the Z28's lap involved wet roads and heavy rain by the end. Chevy engineers say that they could have erased six seconds from the car's lap time if the track had been dry.

According to Chevrolet, three things make the Z28 a success. The complete overhaul of the car's chassis resulted in an acceleration of 1.08 g on cornering, thanks to a better grip. New carbon-ceramic Brembo brakes are able to stop the Z28 uniformly, with a deceleration force of 1.5 g. Finally, the weight of the Z28 has been reduced, compared to that of the supercharged ZL1. Several other changes including lighter wheels and thinner rear wipers explain the weight difference, which is about three hundred pounds.

Under the new 2014 Z28's hood lies a 7.0-litre LS7 engine. Composed of lighter parts such as titanium intake valves and connecting rods, it provides a certified power of 505 horsepower and 482 lb-ft of torque. The manual six-speed close ration transmission is the only one available. The Z28 is, obviously, propulsion and to make the most of this power, traction differential helical gears were installed at the rear.

Wayne McConnell, director of international vehicle performance, said: "Today, the test puts the car to the test as very few drivers would do So when we say a car it is. dressed for the race track, we are convinced that it will run with consistency and reliability for our customers."
