Toyota Unveils New Tundra At Chicago Auto Show

Eschewing the prestigious auto show in Detroit, Toyota has opted to let Midwesterners have the first look at their newly redesigned 2014 Tundra pickup truck. Debuting for the first time, the world will get it's first look at the truck at the Chicago Auto Show which begins February 7.

The Chicago Auto Show is traditionally heavy on trucks, which makes it the perfect venue for Toyota to launch the new Tundra as it seeks to find a place for itself with the big 3 in the crowded truck market. It's got heavy competition from the newly redesigned Ram 1500 which won North American Truck of the Year, and newly redesigned Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra models which will arrive this summer. Introduced in 2000, only 6.2% of the 2012 US truck market was captured by the Tundra. Still, it's sales climbed by over 22% which was more than any of the others.

Pickup sales are increasing as the economy recovers. Often associated with the housing industry and construction, truck sales are often an indicator of local economic health.

Toyota hasn't released any hints yet about the new model of it's full sized half-ton. There are rumours that it comes with a Hino diesel which might give it the push it's looking for since the North American models don't offer a diesel, despite high demand. Prior to the 2009 collapse of the US auto market, Toyota had plans for a diesel Tundra to be released in 2010. If they can keep the price of the diesel reasonable (the Tundra is already more expensive than it's competition), then it should be a strong seller.

In the past, the Texas built Tundra has been nominated for North American Truck of the Year, and twice voted Truck of the Year by Motor Trend magazine. It made headlines in October 2012 when a Toyota Tundra Crew-Max pulled the Space Shuttle Endeavour across the Manchester Boulevard Bridge en route to the California Science Center, an especially tricky feat due to the size, dimensions and available clearance of the spacecraft.
