La Volkswagen Golf Harlequin est lune des éditions spéciales les plus originales produites par Volkswagen. Prévue au départ comme une série promotionnelle très limitée la Golf Harlequin a suscité un fort intérêt du public. Volkswagen a donc décidé den produire environ 264 exemplaires pour lAmérique du Nord tous basés sur la version Golf GL et équipés dun moteur 20 litres quatre cylindres avec transmission manuelle. Introduced in 1996 in North America the Harlequin was based on the Volkswagen Golf Mk3 and created as a marketing concept to showcase the cars modular body construction. The idea originated from a European promotional version of the Volkswagen Polo Harlekin where differently colored body panels were mixed on the same car. For the Golf version Volkswagen assembled cars using four main colors-Tornado Red Chagall Blue Ginster Yellow and Pistachio Green-with each panel intentionally mismatched. Initially Volkswagen planned to build only a small promotional run but strong public interest led to limited production. About 264 Harlequin Golfs were ultimately sold in the United States and Canada all based on the Golf GL trim and equipped with the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and manual transmission. Today the Golf Harlequin has become a cult collector car admired for its playful design and rarity.
